Prams

Prams. (US baby carriage) a vehicle for moving a baby around that consists of a small bed supported by a frame on four wheels: I saw her pushing a pram down the street.

Pram” was short for “perambulator”, a well-obsolete word in the UK.

“Baby carriage” is a pompous invention of the manufacturers and not in normal use.

A pram is a baby’s bed on wheels (the number is irrelevant, but 4 is typical). It is intended to for young babies to lie in. This black pram is in very traditional style.

Prams allow your baby to lie flat, which is essential until your baby can sit up comfortably – this will usually occur when they’re 3-6 months old, but this can vary.

A pushchair is ideal for older babies at around 6 months. A good way to judge if a baby is ready for a pushchair is if they are able to sit up unaided.
